In the 1996-1997 season, Penny Hardaway received a message from the NBA notifying him that his OG Royal Foamposite Ones did not comply with the league's uniform code. The reason was that these sneakers lacked sufficient black to match his Orlando Magic uniform. To address this issue, Hardaway took matters into his own hands and used a Sharpie to add black stripes to the upper of his shoes. Fast forward to 2015, and Nike releases the Foamposite One 'Sharpie' edition, which pays homage to Hardaway's creative solution. Featuring a Varsity Royal upper with black stripes on the ridges of the Foamposite shell, this sneaker also includes black nubuck on the eyestay and heel, a black carbon-fiber shank, and an icy blue translucent outsole.
