In 2010, Finn Mooney, a 10-year-old boy at the time, had undergone 13 heart surgeries. During that same year, the Doernbecher Freestyle Project collaborated with a Nike designer to design a shoe that would symbolize his journey. The Nike Swoosh on the shoe was adorned with stitches resembling Mooney's own stitches, while the heart graphics and the words 'thump thump' showcased his resilience and strength. The recent re-release of the Dunk High SB Retro 'Doernbecher' in April 2019 marked the 15th anniversary of the project's mission to combat serious illnesses in children.
