The Nike Kyrie 2 'Doernbecher' special edition was launched in December 2016. This particular shoe was designed by a young patient named Andy Grass, who was only 11 years old and receiving treatment at the OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Oregon. The inspiration behind Andy's design stemmed from his own personal experience of being injured by a log at the beach and having to recover from two collapsed lungs. In order to reflect his basketball team's colors, the shoe consists of a combination of blue and white. Additionally, the tongue of the shoe features a personalized logo designed by Andy, which showcases a lion on top of a log, holding both a basketball and a baseball bat. On the midfoot strap, there is a tag that reads 'GRASS STRONG', which served as a slogan of encouragement for his parents. Furthermore, the shoe's speckled midsole includes the word 'JOY' as a tribute to Andy's late Aunt. Lastly, the underside of the left shoe strap is adorned with gold lettering that spells out 'LOVE MOM'.
