On September 20, 2016, a noteworthy collaboration took place between adidas and the renowned Japanese fashion label, Mastermind, resulting in the creation of the NMD XR1 'Mastermind' sneaker. Mastermind, established by Masaaki Homma in 1997, is well-known for its iconic and slightly menacing skull-and-crossbones logo, which is prominently featured on the leather protective cage and tongue of this particular NMD XR1 design. Furthermore, in conjunction with the release of the 'Mastermind' NMD XR1, adidas also launched the Tubular Instinct 'Mastermind' sneaker.
