The Nike Air Max 1/97 sneaker was created by Sean Wotherspoon, owner of a popular consignment store, as part of the Nike Vote Forward competition in 2017. This unique design, which won the contest, was officially released on Air Max Day in 2018. It combines the distinctive wavy upper of the Nike Air Max 97 with the iconic midsole of the Air Max 1, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind sneaker. Inspired by his love for vintage apparel, Wotherspoon incorporated elements such as corduroy panels on the upper, reminiscent of ‘80s Nike caps, and a retro smiley design on the insole. The shoe's tongue is adorned with interchangeable Velcro patches, adding a final touch of versatility to this eclectic and eye-catching design.
